ENGLAND NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAMS
The England national football team has represented the nation in international football since the first-ever international match in 1872. The team is governed by the Football Association (FA), affiliated with UEFA, and operates under FIFA's global jurisdiction. England competes in major international tournaments, including the FIFA World Cup, the UEFA European Championship, and the UEFA Nations League.
As one of the world's oldest national teams, England played the first international match against Scotland in 1872. The team's home ground is Wembley Stadium in London, and its training headquarters is at St George's Park in Burton upon Trent. England won the FIFA World Cup in 1966 on home soil, their only major tournament victory. They have qualified for the World Cup sixteen times, achieving fourth-place finishes in 1990 and 2018. Although they have not won the European Championship, they were runners-up in 2020 and 2024. Notably, England is the only team to have won the World Cup but not their major continental title and represents a non-sovereign country in this accomplishment.
