SENEGAL NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

The Senegal national football team, known as Les Lions de la Teranga, represents Senegal in international football. Managed by the Senegalese Football Federation, they are one of Africa's most notable teams. In the 2002 FIFA World Cup, they became the second African team to reach the quarter-finals. Senegal's first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) appearance was in 1965, and they hosted the tournament in 1992. They were runners-up in 2002 and 2019 before winning their first title in 2021. Notably, Senegal has never lost to Brazil, with one win and one draw in friendly matches.

As one of Africa’s most famous national football teams, it wouldn’t be a World Cup without Senegal. The Lions of Teranga have made appearances at three World Cups since 2002, which was also the year they recorded their best result by reaching the quarter-finals.

It’s not only the world stage where Senegal shines. They’ve made 17 appearances in the Africa Cup of Nations and are the current champions, having hoisted the trophy in 2021.

Early History

The Senegal national football team, founded in 1960, made its AFCON debut in 1965, finishing fourth. They gained prominence in the 2002 World Cup by reaching the quarter-finals and finishing as runners-up in the same year's AFCON. Despite a poor showing in the 2012 AFCON and missing the 2014 World Cup, they qualified for the 2018 World Cup but exited in the group stage. Under coach Aliou Cissé, Senegal were runners-up in the 2019 AFCON and won their first AFCON title in 2021. They also reached the Round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup before being eliminated.
