SERBIA NATIONAL FOOTBALL TEAM

The Serbia men's national football team, managed by the Football Association of Serbia, represents the country in international football. Following the breakup of SFR Yugoslavia in 1992, Serbia and Montenegro formed the FR Yugoslavia team. Although they qualified for Euro 1992, international sanctions prevented their participation, which also affected their World Cup and Euro 1996 qualifiers. After sanctions were lifted, Serbia competed in the 1998 World Cup and reached the Round of 16, and the Euro 2000 quarter-finals. However, they have not advanced beyond the group stage in the 2006, 2010, 2018, and 2022 World Cups.

From February 2003 to June 2006, Serbia and Montenegro competed under the name Serbia and Montenegro due to a change in the country's status. After Montenegro's independence in 2006, Serbia established its own football federation and became known as the Serbia national football team. FIFA and UEFA recognize Serbia as the successor to the FR Yugoslavia/Serbia and Montenegro teams, as well as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia/SFR Yugoslavia.

Serbia’s football team has taken many forms over the past century as the country underwent significant changes. The last few decades have brought a little more stability, and the Eagles have responded accordingly, qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in 2006, 2010, 2018 and 2022.

Serbia currently sits at number 25 in the FIFA rankings but has been as high as 6th, a position they achieved all the way back in 1998. 

The Eagles went into the 2022 FIFA World Cup with relatively high hopes and drew a fairly even group containing Brazil, Switzerland and Cameroon. They ultimately walked away disappointed with two losses and a draw to their name, failing to qualify for the next round.

Looking to the future, the Serbian football team will be keen to reach their previous best — fourth on two separate occasions (1930 and 1962) — as they represent their proud nation.
