All You Need To Know About Darts

Darts is a competitive sport where players throw small, sharp-pointed projectiles at a dartboard. Points are scored by hitting marked areas on the board, which are not arranged like archery targets. While there are various versions of the game, "darts" typically refers to the standardized game with specific rules and board design. It is both a professional sport and a popular pub game, especially in the UK and Ireland, and enjoyed recreationally worldwide.

In 1908, darts was declared a game of skill and permitted in pubs. This decision followed the prosecution of the Adelphi Inn's landlord in Leeds for allowing darts, then considered a game of chance, on his premises. The landlord's defense featured top player William 'Bigfoot' Anakin, who demonstrated skill by hitting three double 20s in a row in court.

Dart Equipments

Dartboard

A regulation dartboard is 451 mm (17.8 in) in diameter with 20 metal-separated sections. Quality boards use sisal fibers; cheaper ones use cork or paper.

Darts

Darts consist of points, barrels, shafts, and flights. Points are 32 or 41 mm long. Barrels, made from brass, nickel-silver, or tungsten, come in different shapes and weights. Shafts, available in various lengths and materials, affect dart stability. Flights, in shapes like standard, kite, or pear, stabilize the dart. Competition darts must not exceed 50 g in weight or 300 mm in length.

Playing Specifications

The World Darts Federation standards for play are:

Height: The dartboard's bullseye is 1.73 m (5 ft 8 in) from the floor, considered eye-level for a person 1.83 m (6 ft) tall.

Distance: The oche (throw line) is 2.37 m (7 ft 9 in) from the board. If the board protrudes from the wall, the oche is adjusted to maintain this distance.

Scoring Rules

Dartboard Scoring

The standard dartboard has 20 numbered sections with single, double, and treble areas. Bullseye outer ring scores 25 points; inner bull scores 50 points.

- Large sections score point value.

- Inner thin sections triple points.

- Outer thin sections double points.

- Highest score: 180 (ton 80).

Finishing and Checkouts

Winning darts must hit a double or bullseye. Highest finish: 170 (T20, T20, inner bull). Players use combinations to check out scores.

The Quadro Board

A quad ring offered quadruple points, allowing a maximum score of 240, but is no longer used in professional play.

Aiming

Aiming varies by skill level, from T20 for skilled players to the center of the board for beginners.

Dart Games and Variations

There are many dart game variations. American Darts is popular in the eastern U.S., while Beer Darts involves hitting opponents' beer cans. Belgian Darts (Vogelpik) is traditional in Belgium. Cricket focuses on numbers 20-15 and the bullseye. Dartball is like baseball, and Dart Golf follows golf's scoring. Fives is a London variant, Halve It targets predetermined areas, and Killer aims to eliminate opponents. Lawn Darts is similar to horseshoes, Round the Clock hits sections 1-20 in order, and Shanghai targets specific numbers. Rugby Darts mimics rugby, and Finnish Darts (Tikanheitto) is a casual game in Finland. These offer diverse gameplay experiences.

Professional Dart Play

Since the end of the News of the World Darts Championship, both the BDO and PDC have hosted their own World Professional Championships. The BDO's championship hasn't been held since 2020 due to financial issues, while the PDC's annual championship precedes the BDO's. The PDC also hosts major tournaments like the World Championship, UK Open, and others, broadcasted on Sky Sports and ITV. The WDF holds the World Cup for national teams biennially, while the PDC hosts its own World Cup of Darts. In soft-tip darts, "THE WORLD" serves as the Soft Darts World Championship since 2011, mainly held in East Asia. Dutch tournaments like the International Darts League and World Darts Trophy, which included both BDO and PDC players, have been discontinued.
