All You Need To Know About European Darts Championship

The European Championship is a PDC darts tournament established for top European players to compete with PDC Order of Merit leaders. Since 2016, it occurs at the end of October, featuring the top 32 players from the PDC European Tour Order of Merit.

The European Championship began in 2008 in Frankfurt, Germany, with a £200,000 prize fund. It moved to various locations, including the Netherlands, Belgium, and Austria, before returning to Germany in 2022. Phil Taylor dominated the early years, winning the first four tournaments. Other champions include Simon Whitlock, Adrian Lewis, Michael van Gerwen, James Wade, Rob Cross, and Peter Wright.

Broadcast Coverage

On August 12, 2008, the PDC announced that ITV4 would broadcast the entire event. This was ITV4's second PDC darts tournament following the Grand Slam of Darts. The 2009 event was not televised in the UK, but Bravo broadcast the 2010 event, its first live darts coverage. After Bravo shut down in early 2011, ITV4 resumed coverage that year. The event is broadcast on RTL7 in the Netherlands and Sport1 in Germany. ESPN televised the event in 2012, the first to show both BDO and PDC tournaments. From 2013, ITV4 began broadcasting the event as part of a new deal with the PDC.

Sponsorship Details

PartyPoker.net sponsored the first six editions of the tournament, as well as the now-defunct US Open and Las Vegas Desert Classic. In 2014, 888.com took over sponsorship for one year, and since 2015, Unibet has been the sponsor. In 2021, Cazoo will sponsor the tournament, along with the PDC World Cup of Darts and the Grand Slam of Darts.
