MT SMART STADIUM NRL 2025
About
If you live in New Zealand, chances are you’ve heard of Mount Smart Stadium. Formerly known as Ericsson Stadium, this 30,000-seat venue is home to the New Zealand Warriors. The ground has been built from the volcanic cone of Rarotonga / Mount Smart, with remnants of the volcano being quarried ten kilometres from the city centre to the suburb of Penrose.
Nowadays, Mount Smart Stadium is mostly used for national and international Rugby League matches, plus concerts. Occasional Rugby Union games are played, and soccer gets a look in as well.
The first international League match was played in 1989 when New Zealand played Australia on July 23rd. This was the third test of the 1989 Kangaroos New Zealand tour, and 15,000 fans watched the Aussies topple the Kiwis, winning the series three-nil.
In 1997, Mount Smart (then known as Ericsson Stadium) hosted the Super League’s World Cup Championship Final. The Brisbane Broncos and Hunter Mariners (both from Australia) clashed in front of 12,000 punters, with the Broncos coming out on top.
Two years later, the stadium played host to seventy-five per cent of the Tri-Nations games of 1999. This included the final, which unfortunately saw the home team lose.
In 2019, Mount Smart Stadium was proud to host the first NRL Women’s Premiership, which saw the St George Illawarra Dragons face off against the home New Zealand Warriors team! The home team didn’t have much luck unfortunately and got taken down by the Dragons 26–6.
Mount Smart Stadium is comprised of 22 hectares of land, and offers over 1500 parking spaces, as well as convenient access to public transport. It is considered Auckland’s home of live entertainment, and it frequently plays host to events, functions, and athletic events as well as larger-scale concerts and sporting matches.
In the late 1980s and the early 1990s, the stadium was even used for bungee jumping! Thrill-seekers would jump off the back of the grandstand, with famous faces such as Peter Jackson and Australian captain Wally Lewis daring to take the plunge in 1989.
