Origins

Rugby league football originated from a split in rugby football in Britain, Australia, and New Zealand between 1895 and 1908. The Northern Rugby Football Union (NRFU) formed in 1895 after disagreements with England's Rugby Football Union (RFU) over player compensation, leading to rule modifications aimed at creating a faster-paced game. Similar breakaways occurred in Australia and New Zealand, establishing "rugby football leagues" governed by Northern Union rules. By 1922, the Northern Union renamed itself the Rugby Football League, establishing rugby league football as a distinct sport from rugby union.

The 2025 Rugby League World Cup (RLWC2025), originally planned to include men's, women's, wheelchair, and youth tournaments, was replaced by the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. Initially set to be hosted in the USA and Canada, the event was relocated to France due to financial issues. However, French organizers withdrew in May 2023. Subsequently, the tournaments were canceled on August 3, 2023, with a new, smaller-scale event scheduled for the southern hemisphere in 2026.
