About

Docklands Stadium, presently branded as Marvel Stadium through naming rights sponsorship, stands as a versatile sports and entertainment arena in the Docklands region of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Its construction commenced in October 1997 and concluded in 2000, totaling A$460 million ($936.42 million in 2023 terms). The stadium boasts a retractable roof and adaptable ground-level seating, capable of transitioning from an oval to a rectangular configuration.

The stadium, initially intended to replace Waverley Park, primarily hosts Australian rules football. It serves as the Australian Football League (AFL) headquarters since October 2016 and can accommodate over 53,000 spectators, making it Melbourne's second-largest stadium after the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Apart from Australian rules football, it hosts diverse sporting events like cricket, soccer, rugby league, and rugby union matches, along with special events and concerts. Additionally, the precinct houses the Seven Network's digital broadcast center and a branch of NAB.

A $225 million redevelopment of the stadium and its surroundings, backed by the AFL and Victorian Government, is scheduled from 2021 to 2024. As part of this project, two new video screens were installed beneath the stadium's roof behind each goalpost before the 2022 AFL season. The remaining redevelopment aims to enhance stadium facilities, establish connections to Melbourne CBD, and provide access to the Docklands waterfront.
