THE GABBA BBL TICKETS
All You Need To Know About The Gabba
The Brisbane Cricket Ground, known as the Gabba, is a major sports stadium in Brisbane, Queensland. It hosts events including cricket, Australian rules football, and concerts. Home to the Queensland Bulls, Brisbane Heat, Brisbane Lions, and a secondary venue for the Brisbane Broncos, the Gabba underwent a redevelopment from 1993 to 2005 costing A$128 million. The field measures 170.6 by 149.9 meters. The capacity is 36,000 for international cricket and 37,478 for AFL matches. It will be upgraded for the 2032 Summer Olympics and Paralympics.
History and Foundation
The Gabba was designated as a cricket ground in 1895, with the first match held on December 19, 1896. Cricket was previously played at Green Hills. Greyhound racing occurred at the Gabba in 1928 and from 1972 to 1993. The Gabba hosted its first Test match between Australia and South Africa in November 1931.
Growth and Development
In 1993, The Gabba began converting into an all-seater stadium, removing the greyhound track and upgrading facilities for the Brisbane Bears, who played their first AFL game there on April 11, 1993. Further renovations from 1995 to 2005 added two-tier stands and light towers, costing $128 million. A $35 million refurbishment in 2020 improved media, corporate facilities, entrances, and amenities, completed before the 2020 AFL Grand Final.
Preparations for the 2032 Summer Olympics
In preparation for the 2032 Olympics in Brisbane, the Gabba was chosen as a central venue. Originally slated for a $1 billion renovation to seat 50,000, costs were later revised to $2.7 billion. The stadium was set to host Athletics and the opening/closing ceremonies. However, in November 2023, the government confirmed demolition plans, slated for early 2026 with completion by late 2029. This decision would lead to the closure of the historic East Brisbane State School. On March 18, 2024, the Queensland government scrapped the rebuild altogether.
Events Held at the Venue
