All You Need To Know About Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG)

The Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), or The 'G, is an Australian sports stadium in Yarra Park, Melbourne. Managed by the Melbourne Cricket Club, it has a seating capacity of 95,000 plus 5,000 standing room, making it the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere and the second-largest cricket ground globally. Built in 1853, the MCG has hosted significant events like the 1956 Summer Olympics, 2006 Commonwealth Games, and two Cricket World Cups. It is central to international cricket, having hosted the first Test match and One Day International. The stadium is also the main venue for AFL matches, including the Grand Final. The MCG is home to the Australian Sports Museum and hosts various sports and events. It is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and the Australian National Heritage List. Journalist Greg Baum described it as a "shrine" and "landmark" symbolizing Melbourne to the world.

Early History

The MCG is built on a former Wurundjeri camping ground. The Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), founded in 1838, selected the current site in 1853 after moving from several locations. The chosen Yarra Park site, initially used by police, was ideal for cricket and became a popular promenade.

In 1861, trustees were appointed to manage the ground, initially led by MCC appointees. By 1906, government-appointed trustees gained control. Originally restricted to cricket, the ground's use expanded in 1933. The area later developed to include Olympic venues and other sports facilities.

Development of the Stadium

The MCG's first grandstand, a wooden members' stand, was built in 1854, followed by a public grandstand in 1861. The world's first Test match was hosted there in 1877. Several grandstands were built and replaced over the years, including the Southern Stand in 1937 and the Olympic Stand for the 1956 Olympics. Capacity peaked at 121,696 in 1970. Major redevelopments included the Great Southern Stand in 1992, renamed the Shane Warne Stand in 2022, and a new structure for the 2006 Commonwealth Games. Recent upgrades included LED lighting in 2020 and a refurbishment of the Great Southern Stand from 2011 to 2013, with the highest recent attendance over 100,000 for the 2022 and 2023 AFL Grand Finals.
