The stadium features a retractable roof and movable seating for rectangular configurations, though this is rarely used due to practical challenges.

Stadium Evolution and Ownership Transition

Docklands Stadium, constructed in a rush before its first match in 2000, faced early challenges with its playing surface and orientation. Ongoing efforts to improve turf quality followed criticism. In 2015, LED advertising and synthetic turf were added, though the latter was narrowed after an injury incident. 

Tenant clubs voiced dissatisfaction over high operating costs and revenue sharing, leading to compensation payments from the AFL and occasional matches being played elsewhere for financial reasons. A major redevelopment from 2021 to 2024 aimed to address these issues and enhance infrastructure, with ownership of the stadium transferring to the AFL in 2016, leading to improved financial arrangements for tenant clubs and crucial support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Evolution of Naming Rights

The stadium, originally known as Colonial Stadium under a $32.5 million deal, later became Telstra Dome after Commonwealth Bank sold naming rights to Telstra. In March 2009, Etihad Airways took over naming rights, leading to the venue being called Etihad Stadium. 

In September 2018, a new naming rights deal with the Walt Disney Company resulted in the stadium being renamed Marvel Stadium, accompanied by the installation of a Marvel retail store.

Features of the Stadium

The stadium features an oval-shaped playing surface covering 19,053 square meters, with a retractable roof positioned 38 meters above. Movable seating allows for a switch to a rectangular layout. In 2022, two large internal video screens were installed behind each goal, accompanied by smaller ones on opposite flanks. Additional amenities include 1,000 video seats, 13 function rooms, 66 corporate boxes, and The Medallion Club. It offers 1,700 parking spaces beneath the playing surface and over 700 lights for arena illumination. With a capacity ranging from 12,000 to 74,000 depending on the event, its AFL capacity is 53,359. The playing area measures 159.5 meters by 128.5 meters, with ends named after AFL legends Tony Lockett and Gordon Coventry.

Accessing the Venue

Docklands Stadium is conveniently located near Southern Cross Station, connected to major train and coach lines. Adjacent to the station, it's easily accessible via tram routes including Route 70, Route 75, Route 86, and Route 30. On event days, a 500-vehicle carpark beneath the stadium is available for public use.

Cultural Impact

The stadium featured in the 2007 film Ghost Rider, digitally altered to the "SoBe Dome". It also appears in Jessica Mauboy's music video "Running Back" and various television shows, including City Homicide on the Seven Network and Rush on Network Ten.
