All You Need To Know About Lavington Sports Ground

Lavington Sports Ground, formerly "Lavington Panthers Oval" (2001-2009), is located in Hamilton Valley near Lavington on Albury's north-west edge, Australia. Nestled on a hillside, it features concrete terraces, a grass embankment, a grandstand, and changing rooms. The venue includes a four-table cricket wicket, a velodrome, and two netball courts. It was previously adjacent to the Lavington Panthers Sports Club.

Home to the Lavington Panthers Football Club in the Ovens & Murray Football League, it hosts grand finals attracting 10,000 to 15,000 spectators. In summer, it serves as the home ground for the Lavington Panthers cricket team in the Cricket Albury-Wodonga Provincial competition.

History of Lavington Sports Ground

Construction of the current grandstand at Lavington Sports Ground began in December 1972. The venue hosted its first Ovens & Murray Football League Grand Final in 1981, with Wodonga defeating Albury. Since 1995, it has been the regular host for the league's Grand Finals, while Preliminary Finals are held at other major venues like Albury Sports Ground or Norm Minns Oval. In 2001, the Penrith Panthers, through the Penrith Entertainment Group, took over the facility. Albury City Council bought it in July 2009 for $1.2 million and upgraded the lighting in 2010 to meet television standards. That same year, it hosted the Group Nine Rugby League Grand Final for the first time. In 2016, the council announced extensive refurbishment plans.

2016-17 Renovation Project

Since Albury City acquired Lavington Sports Ground from the Panthers Group in 2009, various enhancements have been implemented, alongside the acquisition of 4.6 hectares of land for additional playing fields. In December 2015, the council secured $4.025 million from the Federal Government's National Stronger Region Fund, combined with $3.5 million from the council itself, $250,000 from the AFL, and support from local clubs. With project design almost finalized, construction is set to begin in late 2017.

Global and Domestic Utilization

Aussie Rules Football

From the early 1990s until 2006, Lavington often hosted AFL practice matches during the pre-season. However, inadequate lighting led the AFL to prioritize matches elsewhere from 2006 onwards. Following a lighting upgrade, AFL pre-season matches returned to Lavington in 2015 with a game between Richmond and Port Adelaide.

Murray Kangaroos in VFL and International Rules Warm-Up

From 2000 to 2002, the Murray Kangaroos competed in the VFL as a collaboration between the AFL's North Melbourne Football Club and the Ovens and Murray Football League, serving as North Melbourne's secondary team. They split their home games between Lavington and Coburg City Oval in Melbourne. The team comprised both Kangaroos players and additional talent from the Ovens and Murray League, offering local footballers another shot at the AFL Draft.

Additionally, in 1990, the venue hosted a warm-up match for the 1990 International Rules Series between Australia and Ireland, with Australia prevailing 2.9.17 (56) to Ireland's 2.6.11 (41).

Cricket
Lavington hosted World Series Cricket's Country Cup in 1977/78 and 1978/79, a Sheffield Shield match in 1989/90, and a New South Wales vs. England tour match in 1990. During the 1992 Cricket World Cup, Zimbabwe upset England at this venue. On 13 December 2016, it featured three Big Bash League exhibition matches. The Big Bash League returned on 31 December 2022, with Sydney Thunder defeating Hobart Hurricanes in front of 10,171 fans.

Lavington hosted the Tooheys Challenge Cup grand finals in 1994 and 1995, where South Sydney defeated Brisbane 27–26, and Brisbane won against Cronulla 30–14. The City vs Country game scheduled for 2007 was moved due to lighting issues, but Lavington hosted it in 2011, with Country winning 18–12.
