Australian Rules Football

Early Years

Football has been played at Kardinia Park since the 19th century. Before the 1940s, Kardinia Park was the secondary football venue in Geelong, with Corio Oval serving as the primary venue. The Geelong Football Club played its Victorian Football League games at Corio Oval until 1940. From 1922 to 1925, Kardinia Park was the home ground for the Geelong (A.) Football Club in the Victorian Football Association, before the club moved to the Western Oval in Geelong West. Local and district football matches were regularly held at Kardinia Park.

In 1941, the Geelong Football Club began playing its home games at Kardinia Park after Corio Oval was commandeered by the military during World War II, making Kardinia Park its permanent home venue.

Modern History

On May 23, 2002, and again in June 2007, Kardinia Park hosted a visit from the Dalai Lama. Kardinia Park, known for Geelong's strong performance record, saw the team remain undefeated at the venue from August 26, 2007, to August 27, 2011. Geelong's Jimmy Bartel credited this to practicing on their home field

On June 22, 2011, it was announced that the stadium, previously known as Skilled Stadium, would be renamed in 2012. Past names include Shell Stadium and Baytec Stadium. The nickname "The Cattery" is popular among fans.

On July 30, 2011, Geelong achieved its largest victory, defeating Melbourne by 186 points, scoring 37.11 (233), the highest ever at Kardinia Park.

Floodlights were added before the 2013 AFL season, allowing for the venue's first night match.[13] On September 7, 2013, it hosted its first AFL Final, with Geelong losing to Fremantle Dockers 87–72.

The stadium includes the Reg Hickey Stand, Players Stand, Premiership Stand, Brownlow Stand, Joel Selwood Stand, and the Gary Ablett Terrace.

On July 4, 2021, due to a COVID-19 lockdown in Sydney, Kardinia Park hosted its first AFL match not involving Geelong, with Sydney Swans defeating West Coast Eagles 118–26 before 9,520 fans.

Cricket

In 2016, international cricket debuted at the ground with the second T20 International between Australia and Sri Lanka on February 19th. Sri Lanka clinched victory by 2 wickets in a thrilling chase, securing 173 runs on the last ball.

On January 3, 2018, the ground hosted a Women's Big Bash League and Big Bash League doubleheader, with the Melbourne Renegades triumphing in both matches against the Sydney Sixers.

Initially planned for the 2020 ICC T20 World Cup, the tournament was rescheduled to October 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with the United Arab Emirates and Oman hosting instead of Australia. Australia later hosted the 2022 ICC T20 World Cup.

Revamping, Rejuvenating and Transformations

Over two decades, Kardinia Park underwent extensive redevelopment, funded by a mix of government and club contributions. Renaming honors followed each phase, with stands named after prominent figures. Despite delays, the fifth stage, named the Joel Selwood Stand, was completed in early 2024. The project, costing $340 million, has earned the stadium the nickname "Pork-barrel Park." Since January 2018, the stadium has been commercially known as GMHBA Stadium.
