ADELAIDE OVAL BBL TICKETS

All You Need To Know About Adelaide Oval BBL

Adelaide Oval, located between Adelaide's city center and North Adelaide, is a renowned sports ground primarily used for cricket and Australian rules football, but also hosts rugby, soccer, tennis, and concerts. Described as "one of the most picturesque Test cricket grounds," it blends modern architecture with historical charm after its 2014 redevelopment.

Home to the South Australian Cricket Association since 1871 and the South Australian National Football League since 2014, it is managed by the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority. Record crowds include 55,317 for cricket (2017 Ashes Test) and 62,543 for football (1965 SANFL Grand Final). The Oval also features Australia's first stadium hotel, the Oval Hotel, with 138 rooms.

Evolution of Adelaide Oval: A Historical Development

Adelaide Oval was established in 1871 after the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA) was granted land between North Adelaide and the River Torrens. Key developments include the construction of a rollercoaster in 1888, a picket fence in 1900, the iconic scoreboard in 1911, and the Sir Donald Bradman Stand in 1990. Night lighting was added in 1997.

In 2010, the western stand was redeveloped, and a major $535 million upgrade began in 2012, boosting capacity to 50,083 by 2014. The redevelopment preserved the historic scoreboard and fig trees. Adelaide Oval now hosts both cricket and Australian rules football, with management shared by SACA and SANFL. It also features the Oval Hotel with 138 rooms. The stadium's lighting was updated to LEDs by 2023.

Design and Layout

Originally, Adelaide Oval measured 190m x 125m, making it unusually long and narrow for an Australian cricket/football ground. This favored batsmen playing square of the wicket and penalized bowlers for short or wide deliveries. Before the ends were roped off to shorten the playing area, all-run fours or even fives were common.

Pitch Dimensions

The Adelaide Oval pitch runs north–south. Historically, it favored batsmen and offered little help to bowlers until the final day. Since the 2013 redevelopment, a drop-in pitch has been used.

Oval

Following the 2011–2014 redevelopment, Adelaide Oval's dimensions were adjusted to 183m x 134m, making it more suitable for Australian Rules Football, with a playing field size of 167m x 124m.

The Hill: A Historic Gathering Spot

"The Hill, built in 1898 with earth from the River Torrens, serves as general admission for most events. It's a popular spot for passionate cricket fans due to its proximity to the Adelaide Oval Scoreboard bar.”

The Historic Scoreboard on The Hill

The scoreboard currently situated on The Hill dates back to 1911, retaining its original Edwardian design. It holds a place on the City of Adelaide Heritage Register and is safeguarded by legislation, preserving the ground's allure. Beneath the scoreboard, there is a bar available.

Adelaide Oval Members' Stands

The first phase of Adelaide Oval's recent redevelopment built the members' stands, conserving original features like brick archways and the long room. Named after cricket icons, these stands are the Sir Edwin Smith Stand, the Sir Donald Bradman Pavilion, and the Chappell Stand. The Bradshaw Bell, in the Bradman Pavilion, pays tribute to former SACA CEO Keith Bradshaw and rings at the start of each Test match day.

Revitalizing the Riverbank Stand

Adelaide Oval's Riverbank Stand, named after its backdrop, the River Torrens, is located on the southern side of the venue and accommodates up to 14,000 spectators.

Embracing the Eastern Stands

The Eastern Stands, seating 19,000, are split into five sections named after South Australian Australian rules football icons: Gavin Wanganeen, Jack Oatey, Max Basheer, Fos Williams, and Mark Ricciuto.

Cricket on a Global Scale

On January 26th, which replaces the traditional Australia Day test, and every four years, one of the five Ashes test matches against England occurs. Typically held in early December, these matches pit Australia against the touring team of that season. Adelaide Oval hosted the first day/night Test match on November 27, 2015. In 2011, it hosted its first Twenty20 International between Australia and England, which England won by 1 wicket. Adelaide Oval was selected as one of the venues for the 2022 ICC Men's T20 World Cup, where it will host one of the semi-finals.

Domestic Cricket: Ashes, Day/Night Tests, and T20 Internationals at Adelaide Oval

Adelaide Oval serves as the home venue for the South Australian state cricket team, known as The West End Southern Redbacks in first-class cricket and the Adelaide Strikers in Twenty20 cricket. The Strikers participate in the Big Bash League, while the Southern Redbacks compete in the Sheffield Shield and JLT One Day Cup.
