HERITAGE BANK STADIUM BBL TICKETS
All You Need To Know About Heritage Bank Stadium
Carrara Stadium, also known as People First Stadium, is on the Gold Coast, Queensland, and serves as the home ground for the AFL's Gold Coast Suns. It hosts Australian rules football and occasionally cricket, including Big Bash League matches. Initially redeveloped for the Brisbane Bears in 1987, the stadium later accommodated various sports. It hosted the 2018 Commonwealth Games ceremonies and athletics and may host cricket for the 2032 Summer Olympics.
Early History of Carrara Stadium
In 1983, the Nerang Bulls Rugby Union Club played at Carrara Oval before moving to Glennon Park in 1985. The Brisbane Bears used Carrara as their home ground starting in 1987, with significant upgrades funded by Christopher Skase. Poor attendance due to transportation issues and poor performance led to their move to the Brisbane Cricket Ground in 1993.
Carrara Stadium hosted the first Touch Football World Cup in 1988 and the Gold Coast Clippers baseball team in 1989-1990. It later served as a training camp for the Brazilian football team before the 2000 Olympics. The field, named Laver Oval, transferred ownership from the Shire of Albert to Gold Coast City Council in 1995.
Development and Expansion
After the Gold Coast Seagulls folded in 1995, the Gold Coast Chargers played at Carrara Stadium from 1996 to 1998. Rugby league continued with trials and NRL matches through 2005.
The Gold Coast Titans used Carrara as their home ground in 2007 before moving to Robina Stadium in 2008. The AFL scheduled North Melbourne games at Carrara in 2007, but poor attendance led to their release from the contract in 2008. Carlton, Richmond, and St Kilda hosted remaining games in 2009.
Stadium Revitalization
In May 2009, Carrara Stadium began a $126 million redevelopment for the Gold Coast Suns. Demolition started in October 2009, and by January 2010, it was complete. Construction of grandstands and facilities followed, with the stadium completed by January 2011 at a cost of $144.2 million. It seats 25,000 spectators, expandable to 40,000, and hosts various sports and events. During the 2020 AFL season, impacted by COVID-19, the stadium served as a hub for interstate teams, hosting a record 42 matches. Carrara Stadium remains the home ground for the Gold Coast Suns and hosts a variety of events.
Evolution of the Gold Coast Suns
Since mid-2011, the Gold Coast Suns have called Carrara home. The stadium's redevelopment, funded by the Queensland Government ($60 million), Gold Coast City Council ($20 million), and the AFL ($10 million), increased capacity to around 25,000. Notable attendance peaks include a 2011 game against Collingwood and a 2014 match against Collingwood, drawing record crowds.
Cricket
Carrara Stadium, shared by the Gold Coast District Cricket Club and the Brisbane Bears from 1990 to 1993, hosted notable matches, including a controversial international game between Queensland and England in 1991. After redevelopment, it hosted its first international match in 2018, along with several Big Bash League games. It's considered as a potential home ground for a Gold Coast-based Big Bash League team. In the 2023-2024 season, it hosted all Brisbane Heat home finals, attracting a record crowd of 20,191 for the Qualifier final.
Live Musical Performances at Carrara
Carrara Stadium hosted Kiss, Alice Cooper, and a boxing match over the Easter weekend in 2001. The Foo Fighters set a record attendance in 2011. The Gold Coast Big Day Out was held there in 2014. SandTunes Music Festival was planned for 2019 but cancelled. Queen + Adam Lambert drew a record crowd in 2020. Guns N' Roses' show was postponed from 2021 to 2022.
Commonwealth Games
Role in the 2018 Commonwealth Games
Carrara Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies and athletics events of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Originally, the athlete's village was planned next to the stadium, but it was built in Southport instead. The stadium's capacity was temporarily increased to 35,000 for the games.
Naming Rights: A New Identity
Initially known as Carrara Stadium and later as Gold Coast Stadium, the venue lacked a naming rights sponsor for several decades. In 2011, Metricon Homes secured a $3 million, 5-year deal, renaming it Metricon Stadium. This agreement was extended until 2020, and later to the end of 2022. In 2023, the stadium became Heritage Bank Stadium after a contract with Heritage Bank. Following Heritage Bank's merger with People's Choice Credit Union, the stadium was renamed People First Stadium in March 2024.
