Melbourne United, a professional basketball team based in Melbourne, Victoria, competes in the National Basketball League (NBL) and plays home games at John Cain Arena. Originally known as the Melbourne Tigers, the team joined the NBL in 1984 under the ownership of the Melbourne Basketball Association (MBA). Led by coach Lindsay Gaze and his son Andrew, they secured two championships in the 1990s. Transitioning to private ownership in 2002, they continued their success with notable players like Dave Simmons and Lanard Copeland, clinching titles in 2006 and 2008. Renamed Melbourne United in 2014, the change sparked controversy among fans and players. Despite this, they claimed their first championship in 2018 and secured their sixth title in 2021, placing them second in NBL history behind the Perth Wildcats with ten championships.

The Melbourne Tigers initially played at Albert Park Basketball Stadium (1984–1987) before moving to the Melbourne Entertainment Centre (1988–1991), then to Rod Laver Arena (1992–2000). Due to rising costs, they relocated to Vodafone Arena (now John Cain Arena) in 2000, later moving to the State Netball and Hockey Centre (2002–2017). Since 2012, home games have been split between John Cain Arena and the Netball Centre, with occasional matches at Margaret Court Arena (2014–2016). Presently, Melbourne United hosts games primarily at John Cain Arena, with training facilities and offices at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre in Albert Park since 2018.
