All You Need To Know About Cairns Taipans 

The Cairns Taipans are an Australian pro basketball team from Cairns, Queensland. Competing in the National Basketball League (NBL), they host their home games at the Cairns Convention Centre, also called "The Snakepit." Notably, the Taipans are the last not-for-profit club in the league.

The Cairns Taipans, founded in 1999, debuted in the National Basketball League (NBL) with a challenging 2–26 record. In their first four seasons, they didn't reach the playoffs, but they secured their first final win in 2003–04 by defeating the Perth Wildcats 103–96 before being eliminated by the West Sydney Razorbacks. They then had three consecutive playoff appearances from 2005–06 to 2007–08. 

However, financial troubles struck in 2008, leading to the team's voluntary administration, resulting in restructuring and pay cuts. Despite further financial issues in 2009, the team continued to compete in the NBL. In the 2010–11 season, the Taipans reached their first Grand Final series but lost to the New Zealand Breakers. They achieved their first minor premiership in 2014–15 with a 21–7 record and reached their second Grand Final series but again fell to the Breakers despite having home-court advantage.

Upcoming Cairns Taipans Events

The CQUniversity Cairns Taipans will kick off their 2023-24 NBL season with an away game against the New Zealand Breakers on 30 September, followed by their first home game against the South East Melbourne Phoenix on 5 October. This season's early start is the earliest since 2009, signaling a promising year at the Cairns Convention Centre.

The reigning champions, the Sydney Kings, visit Cairns on 28 October for a rematch of last season's semi-finals. The regular season extends until mid-February, mostly featuring weekend games, with a Boxing Day match against the Perth Wildcats and a New Year's Eve game against Melbourne United, coinciding with the Cairns Regional Council fireworks. All games in the 2023-24 NBL season will be broadcast on Kayo and Foxtel, with Sunday games also on 10 Peach and 10 Play.
