All You Need To Know About The New Zealand Breakers

The New Zealand Breakers, known as the BNZ Breakers for sponsorship reasons, are a professional basketball team based in Auckland. They are the only non-Australian team competing in the National Basketball League (NBL), primarily playing at Spark Arena. The Breakers made history by winning their first NBL championship in 2011 and then achieving a rare three-peat by defending their title in 2012 and 2013. They secured their fourth championship in 2015. From 2005 to 2018, the team was owned by Liz and Paul Blackwell before a consortium led by former NBA player Matt Walsh became the majority shareholders through Breakers Basketball Ltd.

The New Zealand Breakers joined Australia's National Basketball League (NBL) in 2003, overcoming early struggles to build a strong foundation. Ownership shifted to Liz and Paul Blackwell in 2005, and Andrej Lemanis became head coach, leading to the team's first playoff appearance in 2007–08. The Breakers' golden era began in 2010–11 with their first NBL championship, followed by titles in 2012, 2013, and 2015, achieving a rare three-peat. In 2018, former NBA player Matt Walsh and his consortium took ownership. The COVID-19 pandemic affected the 2019–20 and 2020–21 seasons, but the Breakers returned to the grand final in 2022–23 under new head coach Mody Maor, eventually losing to the Sydney Kings. The 2023–24 season ended with a 13–15 record and a loss in the play-in game, with Thomas Abercrombie retiring as the team's most-capped player.
