MCG MELBOURNE

About

Seeing a sporting match at the MCG is a bucket-list item for many people. After all, the ground is the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and the 11th largest globally, meaning you’re guaranteed to have an unforgettable experience simply by stepping foot in the stadium.

The MCG plays host to a variety of sporting events all year round, from AFL to cricket. Large-scale entertainment events are also often held at the ground during the sporting off-season, and crowds for these concerts regularly reach the 100,000 mark.

Where Is the MCG?

The MCG is located in the heart of Melbourne, close to the Melbourne and Olympic Park precincts. The ground itself is approximately 1 km from the CBD and sits on the border of Richmond and East Melbourne, which is a historic and affluent area of the city.

The MCG is located close to the Olympic and Melbourne Park precincts, which include a number of other popular sporting venues, including Rod Laver Arena. The ground is surrounded by Yarra Park, which is a much-loved tourist attraction itself.

In addition to the wide range of sporting and entertainment events held at the stadium, visiting the Australian Sports Museum located inside the venue is a must for tourists and sporting fans. The Museum features interactive exhibits, sporting challenges, and classic memorabilia from a variety of sporting codes.

How Do I Get to the MCG?

The MCG was constructed in 1853, meaning that much of the city has been built around it. You have plenty of options for getting to and from the venue all year round.

If you’re looking to take public transport, there are two train stations close to the stadium — Richmond and Jolimont. Alternatively, three tram routes that travel through the city stop close to the ground.

You also have the option of driving to the game, with game-day parking available on the grounds of Yarra Park. Keep in mind that parking is subject to capacity, and it might take a little while to exit the venue post-match!

Where Can I Park at the MCG?

On game day, the MCG makes parking available on the grounds of the surrounding Yarra Park. The availability of parking will depend on a number of factors, including the event and the weather.

Given the close proximity to the city, there is a number of other parking garages available within a short distance of the ground.

How Many People Does the MCG Hold?

The MCG is perhaps best known for being one of the largest stadiums in the world. Sitting just outside the top ten (number eleven, in fact), it is regularly used to host some of the world’s biggest sporting events.

Officially, the MCG currently has a capacity of 100,024. However, the ground has held crowds far larger than this, including 121,696 at the 1970 VFL Grand Final between Carlton and Collingwood and 109,500 at the Ed Sheeran Mathematics Tour.

A handful of home and away AFL matches throughout the season will reach the 90,000 mark, and the grand final regularly attracts close to 100,000 people.

Who Is Playing at the MCG?

Week in and week out, the MCG plays host to a number of AFL matches. Several clubs call the ground their home, including Collingwood, Richmond, Melbourne, Hawthorn, Essendon, and Carlton.

When two big Victorian teams go head to head, getting your hands on tickets to these matches can be difficult. Fortunately, The Ticket Merchant is here to help with access to the best seats in the house. Our range of premium AFL MCG tickets will ensure you don’t miss a second of the action.

AFL is not the only sport played at the ‘G. The ground regularly hosts cricket matches over the summer and even soccer games when the big teams visit.
