History

Construction of John Cain Arena began in the late 1990s and was completed in 2000. The arena features a retractable roof, allowing tennis to be played in all weather conditions. It also has a GreenSet surface, used for tennis since 2019, and a cycling track that can be covered with seating for court events. The venue can hold up to 11,000 spectators for concerts, and 10,500 for basketball, netball, and tennis.

The arena has hosted netball teams like Melbourne Phoenix and Melbourne Kestrels before they merged to form the Melbourne Vixens, who use the venue along with the Magpies. Melbourne United plays their basketball games here, except during the Australian Open, when they move to the State Netball and Hockey Centre. Both the Vixens and Melbourne United occasionally share games between John Cain and Margaret Court Arenas, depending on crowd size.
