Angelique Kerber, born on 18 January 1988, is a former German professional tennis player who achieved the world No. 1 ranking in singles for a total of 34 weeks. She won three major titles: the 2016 Australian Open, the 2016 US Open, and the 2018 Wimbledon Championships, and also earned an Olympic silver medal in 2016. Kerber ended 2016 as the year-end world No. 1, solidifying her place at the top of women’s tennis.
Kerber began her professional career in 2003, rising to prominence in 2011 when she reached the US Open semifinals as the world No. 92. Known for her left-handed play, she broke into the top 5 in 2012 and reached the No. 1 spot on 12 September 2016, becoming the 22nd and oldest player to achieve this ranking. Throughout her career, Kerber won 14 singles titles across all surfaces, including three Grand Slam titles. Known as a defensive baseliner, her game is marked by speed, agility, and athleticism. Kerber’s forehand, especially her down-the-line shot, is a powerful weapon, while her unique squatting backhand allows her to hit sharp angles. Although her serve is her main weakness, she compensates with her defensive skills and ranks among the top returners on the WTA Tour. Her preferred surface is grass, which complements her flat-hitting style, although she has also found success on hard courts.
