All You Need To Know About Tottenham FC Club

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, often known as Tottenham or Spurs, is a professional football team situated in Tottenham, London, England. They compete in the Premier League, the highest division of English football. Since April 2019, they have been playing their home matches at the 62,850-capacity Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which replaced their former home ground, White Hart Lane, situated on the same site after its demolition.

Founded in 1882, Tottenham's emblem features a cockerel atop a football, with the motto "Audere est Facere" ("to dare is to do"). Their iconic white shirts and navy blue shorts have been their home kit since 1898–99. The team's training ground is located on Hotspur Way in Bulls Cross, Enfield. Notably, they secured the FA Cup in 1901, the first non-League club to do so since the establishment of the Football League in 1888.

Early Grounds

During their early days, Spurs contested their matches on public land at the Park Lane end of Tottenham Marshes, necessitating their own pitch preparation and marking. Occasionally, conflicts arose on the marshes with other teams regarding the ground's use, resulting in sporadic altercations. The local press documented Spurs' initial reported match on Tottenham Marshes on October 6, 1883, where they triumphed 9–0 against Brownlow Rovers. Notably, it was on this field in 1887 that Spurs first encountered the team that would eventually become their longstanding rivals, Arsenal (then known as Royal Arsenal), leading 2–1 before the game was abandoned due to inadequate lighting following the away team's belated arrival.

Initially playing on public parkland without charging admission, the club saw increasing spectator numbers but no gate receipts. In 1888, they secured a pitch at Northumberland Park for £17 annually, charging spectators 3d per game, increased to 6d for cup ties. The first match at the Park yielded 17 shillings in gate receipts. A stand with 100 seats and changing rooms was erected for the 1894–95 season at a cost of £60, but it collapsed shortly after and required repairs. With growing attendance overwhelming Northumberland Park, Spurs relocated to the White Hart Lane site in 1899.
