About
Snooker is a cue sport played on a rectangular table with green baize and six pockets. It originated in the late 19th century among British Army officers in India. The game involves twenty-two balls: a white cue ball, fifteen red balls, and six colored balls. Players or teams take turns using a cue stick to pot the balls in a specific sequence, aiming to score the most points to win a frame. A match consists of multiple frames, with the winner determined by who wins the most frames.
Neville Chamberlain formalized the game's rules in 1875. Snooker gained popularity in the early 20th century, mainly in the UK, and spread worldwide. The World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association now governs the sport. It grew significantly with televised events like Pot Black in 1969 and daily World Snooker Championship broadcasts from 1978. Notable players include Joe Davis, Steve Davis, and Ronnie O'Sullivan. The game has expanded globally, with increasing professional tournaments and prize money, despite challenges like declining viewership and financial issues for lower-ranked players.
The 2024–25 snooker season featured tournaments from June 2024 to May 2025. Initially, 126 players were on the World Snooker Tour, but it dropped to 125 after Michael White's WPBSA membership was revoked. The tour included the top 64 players from the prize money rankings after the 2024 World Championship and 31 players with a two-year card from the previous year.
