All You Need To Know About The Boxing

The European Boxing Union (EBU), formerly known as the International Boxing Union (IBU), is the governing body for professional boxing in Europe. It oversees various championship bouts, including the EBU European Championship, the EBU EU Championship for European Union boxers, and the EBU EE Championship for non-EU boxers. Affiliated with the World Boxing Council (WBC), the EBU has a significant history of sanctioning high-profile buts. In the early 20th century, the EBU (as IBU) recognized many world title fights, competing with the American-based National Boxing Association (NBA), which had more widely acknowledged title bouts.

The International Boxing Union (IBU), established in 1911 in Paris, was the first international governing body for professional boxing, but it suspended operations during World War I and resumed in 1920. During World War II, it came under Nazi and Fascist control, leading to the creation of the Associazione Pugilistica Professionistica Europea (APPE) with Vittorio Mussolini as president. After the war, the IBU/APPE disbanded, and the European Boxing Union (EBU) was founded in 1946 to govern European boxing. Since 2022, the EBU has banned championship contests involving boxers from Russia and Boelarus due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Best Boxing Games/Events

1. Henry Cooper v Cassius Clay - Wembley Stadium 1963, Highbury 1966- In 1963, heavyweight legends Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) and Henry Cooper clashed at Wembley Stadium before 35,000 fans in one of boxing's most memorable and controversial bouts. In the fourth round, Cooper's powerful left hook, the 'Ammer, knocked Ali to the ropes. Clay was helped back to his corner, allegedly with the use of smelling salts by his trainer, which was illegal. Despite the controversy, Clay recovered to win the fight, later quipping that Cooper's punch "had hit him so hard that his ancestors in Africa felt it."

2. Joe Bugner v Frank Bruno - White Hart Lane, 1987- Australian Joe Bugner, an experienced fighter known for facing legends like Ali and Frazier, fought British favorite Frank Bruno at White Hart Lane. Despite his titles and having beaten Henry Cooper in his final pro fight, Bugner was jeered by the home crowd. In the lead-up, he dismissed Bruno as a "C-class fighter" and predicted a first-round knockout, but the British fans supported Bruno through it all.

3. Lennox Lewis v Frank Bruno - Cardiff Arms Park, 1993- Six years after his last attempt, Bruno returned for his third shot at a world title, facing WBC champion Lennox Lewis in Wales. This bout marked the first time two 'British' fighters competed for a world heavyweight title, with Lewis having won Olympic gold for Canada in 1988. Despite Bruno's strong start, nullifying Lewis's right-hand punches, the seventh round saw a powerful left-hander from Lewis, leading referee Micky Vann to stop the fight as Bruno struggled to remain on his feet.
