MCG AFL TICKETS 2026

About

The Melbourne Cricket Ground, better known as the MCG or even just “the G”, is Australia’s most iconic sports stadium. Boasting a massive 100,024 seats, it commonly hosts the biggest games in Australian sport - including the highly anticipated AFL Grand Final. Conveniently located in Yarra Park, it’s easily accessible via public transport, making it a great spot for AFL fans from all over Melbourne to visit during this iconic sporting season.

The stadium was founded by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), an organisation that still manages it to this day. Originally built in 1853, it has gone through a number of transformations since to become the monumental stadium that it is today. In fact, it’s the largest stadium in the Southern hemisphere and the eleventh-largest stadium in the world.

Despite the name, while the Melbourne Cricket Ground does host local and international cricket, it’s more often used for AFL. Australian rules football brings in huge revenue, with the Grand Final in 2024 reaching almost maximum capacity, with 100,013 seats filled. Despite its current reputation, the MCG had more humble beginning when it comes to AFL. MCC members didn’t want to risk ruining the turf before cricket matches and the first AFL game played officially on the grounds took place in 1879, over two decades after it was built.

These days, you can hardly think of the iconic Australian sport without conjuring up images of AFL games at the MCG. The first AFL team to call the Melbourne Cricket Ground home was Melbourne Football Club, Australia’s oldest club and more commonly know as the Demons. During their time at the MCG, throughout the dawn of the game in the 1870s Melbourne Football Club won an impressive five premierships at their home stadium.

As the grounds and sport grew both in size and reputation, more teams have joined and now call the MCG their home turf. You can get MCG AFL tickets for a number of exceptionally strong home teams including Richmond, Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood, and Hawthorn

How has the 2026 AFL season structure impacted ticket demand at the MCG?

The MCG is the home of AFL and, as a result, always has those massive matchups that have the biggest impact on who makes it to Grand Final day. With matches starting from the early rounds all the way through to the final, there’s always high demand for each and every match played on these historic grounds. With so much fanfare surrounding this stadium, tickets do sell out fast, and it’s important to get in as soon as you can to make sure you get your spot.

What are the parking and transportation options for attending AFL games at the MCG?

Melbourne has an incredibly robust public transport system, making it easy to get to and from the MCG during the AFL season. Many roads are closed down or have limited movement, so if you’re driving in from outside of the city, we recommend parking somewhere in the surrounding suburbs and catching the train or the tram in.

We recommend getting the train into the station nearest to the Stadium, which is Richmond train station. From there, it’s a short walk to the MCG main gates. You can also get there by tram, with routes 70, 75, and 48 all having stops that are near the stadium for reliable and easy access. As we get closer to the final, extra services are often planned to ensure everyone can get a spot, though we do recommend aiming to arrive earlier in case there are any disruptions or high foot traffic on the train platforms.

Given potential delays and limited parking availability, especially during major events, we’d advise that you avoid trying to park nearby unless you need special accessibility.
