2026 AFL WILDCARD ROUND TICKETS

About

A new era of AFL Finals football arrives in 2026 with the introduction of the AFL Wildcard Round. For the first time in VFL/AFL history, teams finishing 7th to 10th on the AFL ladder will battle it out for the final two places in September, creating an extra weekend of blockbuster knockout football before the traditional Finals Series begins.

Taking place over 28th-30th August 2026, the Wildcard Round replaces the traditional pre-finals bye, ensuring footy fans won't have to wait an extra week for meaningful football. Every contest will be sudden death, with seasons on the line from the opening bounce.

The opening Wildcard Final will see the team finishing 7th host 10th, with both clubs desperate to keep their premiership dreams alive. The higher-ranked side earns the right to play at home, but history has shown that finals football rarely follows the script.

The second Wildcard clash features 8th hosting 9th in another winner-takes-all showdown. Expect packed stadiums, fierce rivalries and a genuine finals atmosphere as clubs fight for the chance to join the AFL's top six in the race for the 2026 Premiership.

With clubs such as Geelong, Adelaide, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, St Kilda and Carlton all fighting to secure their place heading into the closing rounds of the home-and-away season, the inaugural Wildcard Round is shaping up to be one of the biggest weekends on the AFL calendar.

Will the extra game prove a disadvantage, or could the momentum gained from a sudden-death victory be enough to launch a genuine premiership charge? We'll soon find out as history is made.

What is the AFL Wildcard Round?

The AFL Wildcard Round is a brand-new addition to the AFL Finals Series, introduced in 2026. Instead of only the top eight progressing directly to September, teams finishing 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th will compete in two knockout matches to determine the final two teams that qualify for the traditional AFL Finals.

How does the AFL Wildcard Round work?

The format is simple:

  • 7th place hosts 10th place
  • 8th place hosts 9th place
  • Both matches are sudden-death finals
  • The highest-ranked winner becomes the 7th seed
  • The other winner becomes the 8th seed

Teams finishing in the top six automatically progress to the AFL Finals and receive a week off before the opening week of September.

Why was the AFL Wildcard Round introduced?

The AFL introduced the Wildcard Round to increase excitement leading into the Finals Series while rewarding clubs that perform strongly throughout the home-and-away season.

The new format keeps more clubs in finals contention for longer, creates additional high-stakes matches for supporters and ensures the pre-finals bye weekend now features meaningful football.

Which teams can qualify for the AFL Wildcard Round?

Only the teams finishing 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th on the AFL ladder qualify for the Wildcard Round.

While the ladder will continue to change throughout the season, clubs including Geelong, Adelaide, Melbourne, Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, St Kilda and Carlton are currently among those fighting for a Wildcard position heading towards September.

Where will the 2026 AFL Wildcard Round be played?

Unlike Gather Round, the Wildcard Round is not played at one central location.

Each higher-ranked club earns the right to host its Wildcard match, meaning games will be played at the home venue of the teams finishing 7th and 8th on the AFL ladder.

Venue details will be confirmed once the final ladder positions are decided.

Can a Wildcard team win the AFL Premiership?

Yes.

Any team that progresses through the Wildcard Round remains eligible to win the AFL Premiership. Although they must play one extra knockout match compared to the top six clubs, they may also benefit from entering September with winning momentum and match fitness.
