THE SMILE TICKETS UK TOUR 2024
All You Need To Know About The Smile
The Smile, a rock band formed by Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood along with Tom Skinner, incorporates post-punk, progressive rock, Afrobeat, and electronic music. Emerging during the COVID-19 lockdowns, they made a surprise debut with a streamed performance at Glastonbury Festival in May 2021. After releasing six singles and performing in London, they released the acclaimed debut album "A Light for Attracting Attention" in May 2022. Produced by Nigel Godrich, Radiohead's longtime producer, the band toured Europe and North America in 2022 and 2023. They've also released live EPs and have a second album, "Wall of Eyes," scheduled for 2024.
The Smile blends post-punk, proto-punk, and math rock, often likened to Radiohead for their unique melodies, time signatures, and vintage rock sensibilities. Alexis Petridis sees them as a more skeletal and knottier Radiohead with progressive rock influences. Wyndham Wallace considers them a regeneration from the same gene pool. Pitchfork notes a bounce in Skinner's drumming and Greenwood's unfamiliar aggression in basslines. Greenwood's use of delay creates angular repeats. "Just Eyes and Mouth" has Afrobeat elements, while "Open the Floodgates" and "The Same" reflect 1960s electronic and systems music. "You Will Never Work in Television Again" is likened to a raw-boned rock number from Radiohead's "The Bends."
Best The Smile Songs of All Time - Top 3 Tracks
Wall Of Eyes - "Method to the Madness" symbolizes the perpetual search for order and meaning in a chaotic world, exploring the human condition of finding patterns in randomness. It acknowledges the existence of a method while recognizing the inherent challenge of fully comprehending it.
The Smoke - "The Smoke" by The Smile explores themes of self-destruction and the yearning for a fresh start. The lyrics convey desperation and a longing for a second chance, with the narrator acknowledging their role in their downfall, symbolized by having "set themselves on fire."
Bending Hectic - “Bending Hectic” narrates a story of a perilous drive on a mountainside, with the driver hallucinating. The lyrics, delivered with intentional pauses, vividly portray the scene. The driver is behind the wheel of a valuable vintage soft-top car from the sixties.”
