All You Need To Know About The National
The National, an American rock group originally hailing from Cincinnati, Ohio, was established in Brooklyn, New York City, in 1999. The band lineup includes Matt Berninger (vocals), twin siblings Aaron Dessner (guitar, piano, keyboards) and Bryce Dessner (guitar, piano, keyboards), along with brothers Scott Devendorf (bass) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Although not officially part of the band, Carin Besser, Matt Berninger's wife, has contributed lyrics to the group since their 2007 album, Boxer.
Established by Matt Berninger, Aaron Dessner, Scott Devendorf, and Bryan Devendorf, The National debuted with their self-titled album, "The National," in 2001, released through Brassland Records—an independent label founded by Aaron and his twin brother, Bryce Dessner. Bryce, initially involved in the album's recording, subsequently became a full-fledged member of the band, contributing to the production of their next release, "Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers" in 2003.
The National, after leaving their day jobs, gained recognition with their third studio album, "Alligator" (2005), under Beggars Banquet Records. Subsequent releases, "Boxer" (2007) and "High Violet" (2010), expanded their visibility. The band earned a Grammy nomination for their sixth album, "Trouble Will Find Me" (2013), and won a Grammy for "Sleep Well Beast" (2017). "I Am Easy to Find" (2019) followed, leading to their ninth album, "First Two Pages of Frankenstein" (2023), featuring notable guests and reaching No. 1 on the Billboard charts in AAA & Rock categories. Music writer Laura Snapes nominated five albums from the band for consideration on NME's 2013 list of The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
Best The National Songs of All Time - Top 3 Tracks
- “Fake Empire”, From Boxer (2007)- The band continually grapples with questions about optimism, relationships, and the nature of reality. The opening track of "Boxer" by The National exemplifies this contemplation, suggesting that being half awake in a fake empire might be preferable to nothing at all—though it's uncertain.
- “Runaway”, From High Violet (2010)- Berninger's lyrics in this High Violet standout showcase his penchant for rhyming words, evident in lines like "I won’t be no runaway, ‘cause I won’t run." This poignant ballad embodies The National's greatness, blending stark emotional depth with an intimate musical arrangement of piano, soft guitars, and brass accents.
- “Start a War”, From Boxer (2007)- The National consistently elevates emotions to the edge of breakdown, embodying a world of intense conflict and urgency. The song "Boxer" encapsulates this sentiment effectively, illustrating that the act of breaking up may not be a literal war, yet it invariably feels like one due to the heightened emotions involved.
