Tenacious D is an American comedy rock duo formed in Los Angeles, California in 1994. The group was founded by actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass. The duo's name is derived from "tenacious defense", a phrase used by NBA basketball sportscasters Walt Frazier and Marv Albert.

Before the release of their debut album "Tenacious D" in 2001, the duo had a three-episode TV series that aired on HBO from 1997 to 2000. This series was a result of their encounter with David Cross in the Los Angeles music scene, and Jack Black's involvement in episodes of "Mr. Show with Bob and David." They also establish Records and released their debut album "Tenacious D" the following year, featuring a full band included a friendship with Dave Grohl, the former drummer of Nirvana, which led to a collaboration between Foo Fighters and Tenacious D. By the late 1990s, they had opened for prominent rock acts such as Weezer, Pearl Jam, Tool, and Beck.

In 2000, they signed with Epic ding Grohl on drums. Their single "Tribute" gained a cult following, contributing to their success in the United Kingdom, Sweden, Ireland, and Australia. In 2003, the band released "The Complete Master Works," their first live concert DVD, which earned gold and platinum status from the RIAA.
