All You Need To Know About Michael Bolton

Michael Bolton, born on February 26, 1953 as Michael Bolotin, is an American songwriter and singer. Initially performing in the hard rock and heavy metal music scenes during the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s, both as a solo artist and as the frontman of the band Blackjack, he later gained prominence for his collection of pop rock ballads following a stylistic shift in the late 1980s.

In 1975, Bolton initiated his recording journey at The Church Studio in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His debut album was self-titled, using his original family name, Bolotin. During the early stages of his musical career, he primarily focused on hard rock, and his band Blackjack even had the opportunity to open for the renowned heavy metal artist Ozzy Osbourne during a tour. There were rumors circulating in 1983 that Bolton had auditioned for the lead vocalist position with Osbourne's former band, Black Sabbath, but he claimed that this was false. Bolton emphasized that the rumor about his Black Sabbath audition was baseless, stating, "That rumor about me auditioning for Black Sabbath was only a rumor, I don't know how on earth it started." In 2015, rapper Kanye West sampled Bolton's 1980 song "Maybe It's the Power of Love" with Blackjack for his own track "Never Let Me Down."

After adopting the name Bolton, he achieved his first major success as a songwriter with "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You," co-written for Laura Branigan, known for her rendition of "Gloria." Although the song narrowly missed the Top 10 on the US pop chart, Branigan took it to number one on the Adult Contemporary chart for three weeks in 1983. Their collaboration continued with "I Found Someone" in 1985, initially a minor hit for Branigan, until Cher revived the song two years later, reigniting her own singing career. Bolton also co-wrote several other tracks for both singers. In 1988, Bolton's own version of "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You" topped the Hot 100 chart.
