Kanye West, born Kanye Omari West and more recently known as Ye, is a well-known American rapper, producer, and designer. Regarded as one of the most influential rappers of his time, Kanye has proved time and again that he can produce dramatic and emotional performances, both on and off stage.

While in recent years Kanye has become notoriously known for stirring up controversy in the media, it is impossible to deny the influence he has had in the hip-hop genre. His loyal fanbase, creativity, innovation, and relentless passion for music suggest that Kanye will remain a competitive figure in the industry for years to come.

The Evolution of Ye

Raised in Chicago, music was always at the forefront of Kanye’s life. He developed an interest at a young age, first through rapping, and then by turning to production.

By his early twenties, Kanye was already one of the most sought-after underground producers in America. His albums combined a wide range of genres while using rap to provide an urban flow. While his albums are always astronomically ambitious projects, he consistently manages to pull through and bring us down to earth with his witty and sublime lyricism.

Kanye wasn’t initially recognised as a rapper. Roc A Fella signed him on as a producer to help out several younger artists on their roster. He continued to pursue a solo rap career and released his debut album The College Dropout to much critical success in 2004.

His production style continued to morph through the years, most notably by incorporating a lot of sonic minimalism in his music. During Late Registration (2005) and Graduation (2007), his main musical style consisted of the ‘chipmunk vocals’ that West popularised through the early 2000s. He did this by speeding up vocals from old soul records and sampling them. These two albums were also part of a quadrilogy (a piece of art that comprised four distinct works).

The evolution of Kanye’'s production skills became particularly evident with the release of 808s and Heartbreak in 2008. Marking a significant chapter in his career, this album was Kanye's first project following the passing of his mother, Donda West. 808s integrated more electronic and techno elements into his music, most notably in the lead single 'Stronger’. Around this time, Kanye also began to broaden his creative pursuits beyond music, particularly in the realm of fashion.

In 2010, Kanye released My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, demonstrating a significant shift in his artistic approach. The album was accompanied by a stunningly produced 35-minute art film, directed by and starring himself.

Subsequent releases only further solidified Kanye's position in the music industry. These included Watch the Throne, a collaboration with the legendary Jay-Z, Yeezus (2013), The Life of Pablo (2016), Ye (2018), Jesus is King (2019), and the critically acclaimed Donda and its sequel, Donda 2. Each album has demonstrated a continuous exploration of new sounds and themes, showcasing Kanye's unwavering creative momentum.

What Do You Wear to a Kanye West Concert?

In life and especially at concerts (an event where you’ll likely be on your feet for a long period of time), you should always wear what you feel most comfortable in. With that said, however, a Kanye West concert is the perfect occasion to embrace a streetwear aesthetic in your outfit choice, as Kanye is widely recognised for his significant influence in this fashion sphere. Pieces like graphic tees, hoodies, baggy or ripped jeans, sneakers and cargo pants are elements of street style – favoured by Kanye – that can form the foundation of your outfit.

Colour-wise, consider drawing inspiration from Kanye's Yeezy line, which is known for its use of neutral and earthy tones; shades of beige, brown, olive green, black, and white. You can make a statement by creating a monochromatic outfit or mixing and matching these colours for a clean, fresh look.

If you happen to own any Yeezy apparel or merch, donning these would be an ideal way to demonstrate your fandom.
