Initially called The Fontaines, they added "D.C." to avoid confusion with another band. They started by releasing singles and gained recognition for their blend of post-punk and garage rock. In 2019, Dogrel was released, followed by extensive touring. They were scheduled to perform at Glastonbury 2020, which was canceled due to the pandemic. Their sophomore album, A Hero's Death, was released in July 2020, followed by Skinty Fia in 2022. In June 2023, Chatten released a solo album, and the band announced a collaborative EP with Massive Attack and Young Fathers.
