Legendary New Zealand band Fat Freddy’s Drop will return to the stage in 2026 for the 21st Anniversary Tour of their acclaimed debut album, Based On A True Story. Spanning 51 shows across Australia, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Europe and the UK, the tour will mark the band’s first live performances since the sudden passing of founding member Chris ‘MU’ Faiumu. In a heartfelt tribute, the group has chosen to honour their late bandmate by continuing with the long-planned tour, celebrating the legacy they built together. Lead vocalist Dallas Tamaira shared, “It’s important for us to honour the intentions we had with MU, and performing this album live is a significant part of that.”

Originally released independently in 2005, Based On A True Story became a cultural phenomenon, blending future funk, dub, soul and electronic influences into a distinctive sound. The album achieved historic success, spending 111 weeks in New Zealand’s Top 40, earning eight NZ Music Awards, and receiving international acclaim, including recognition from Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards in the UK.
