"Wicked" is a musical by Stephen Schwartz with a book by Winnie Holzman. Loosely based on Gregory Maguire's novel "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West," which in turn draws from L. Frank Baum's "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and its film adaptation.

1. The idea for Wicked came to Stephen Schwartz on vacation. In 1996, while vacationing in Hawaii, Stephen Schwartz, famed for his work on Pippin and Godspell, discovered Gregory Maguire's book, "Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West." Captivated by the premise, Schwartz promptly pursued the rights upon returning home.

2. There's a surprising connection between Elphaba and Jordan Catalano. Winnie Holzman, the author of the musical's book, is renowned for creating the iconic TV series My So-Called Life, along with contributions to thirtysomething and Once and Again.

3. There was an Elphaba before Idina Menzel. Before Idina Menzel, Stephanie Block initially portrayed Elphaba during the development phase of the show. However, Menzel, already a Tony nominee for Rent, ultimately took on the role. Block later had the opportunity to originate the role in the first national tour in 2005.
