Stephen James Backshall MBE (born April 21, 1973) is a British naturalist, explorer, presenter, and writer, best known for BBC TV's Deadly 60. He has participated in numerous BBC expeditions, such as Lost Land of the Tiger, Lost Land of the Volcano, Deadly Dinosaurs, and Lost Land of the Jaguar. Additionally, he hosted Expedition with Steve Backshall on Dave and has worked with the National Geographic and Discovery channels. Backshall has also authored a series of four children's novels titled The Falcon Chronicles, along with three adult non-fiction books and various other children's non-fiction works.

Stephen Backshall has won numerous awards, including two BAFTAs in 2011 for Best Children's Television Presenter and Best Factual Series. He received Emmy and Wildscreen nominations, along with a Gold Badge from Blue Peter and an honorary PhD from the University of Exeter in 2012. In 2017, he was named Charity Fundraiser of the Year for raising £360,000 for the World Land Trust. A species of Osornophryne was named after him in 2019, and he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2020. Backshall also received the Scientific Exploration Society Explorer of the Year Award and an honorary degree from Bangor University in July 2023.
