Sheku Kanneh-Mason is one of the most celebrated cellists of his generation, renowned for his expressive playing and wide-ranging musical interests. Born in Nottingham in 1999, he came to international attention in 2016 after winning the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition. He subsequently made his debut with major orchestras across Europe, the United States and beyond, and reached a global audience when he performed at the wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in 2018.

Equally at home in classical masterworks and contemporary repertoire, Kanneh-Mason is known for championing new music and expanding the traditional boundaries of classical performance. He records exclusively for Decca Classics and performs on a Matteo Goffriller cello made in Venice in 1700. Alongside his solo career, he frequently collaborates with his siblings, several of whom are also accomplished musicians, and remains a passionate advocate for music education and accessibility.

Still in his twenties yet already well established as an international artist, he will become the first soloist in Australia to perform Edmund Finnis’ Cello Concerto, offering audiences one of the earliest opportunities in the country to hear this work.

Conducted by Jaime Martín, the program also includes Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, an impressionistic portrayal of a mythical figure suspended between dream and reality. Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 completes the program, tracing a journey through struggle, resolve and triumph.
