PETITE MESSE SOLENNELLE AUSTRALIAN TOUR TICKETS 2026
All You Need To Know About Petite Messe Solennelle
Petite Messe Solennelle is a sacred composition by the Italian composer Gioachino Rossini, written in 1863–64 towards the end of his life and first performed in Paris in March 1864. Although Rossini had retired from opera over three decades earlier, he returned briefly to compose this substantial setting of the Latin Mass. The title—Petite (small) Messe Solennelle (solemn mass)—is somewhat ironic, as the work combines chamber-scale forces with a wide expressive range. Originally scored for four vocal soloists, a small mixed choir, two pianos, and a harmonium, it was dedicated to Countess Louise Pillet-Will and is notable for its distinctive tonal character, blending solemnity with lyricism and operatic energy.
Musically, the mass spans a broad emotional spectrum, from joyful, operatic passages and intricate fugues to contemplative sections such as the Agnus Dei and the soprano aria O salutaris hostia. In 1867 Rossini prepared an orchestral version, which expands the scoring while retaining the work’s expressive depth. Combining melodic brilliance with spiritual sincerity, Petite Messe Solennelle remains one of Rossini’s most admired sacred compositions and continues to be performed widely, celebrated for its unique fusion of intimacy, drama, and devotional character.
