The Brisbane Broncos come into the 2026 NRL season as something they haven't been in a very long time, premiers.
After 19 long years without a premiership, Michael Maguire's side ended the drought in spectacular fashion last October, coming from 10 points down at half-time to beat the Melbourne Storm 26–22 in one of the great modern grand finals. It was Brisbane's seventh title, their first since 2006, and the scenes at Accor Stadium said everything about what it meant to this club and its fans.
Now the question every NRL fan is asking: can they back it up?
What Happened in 2025
To understand what 2026 means for the Broncos, you need to understand just how remarkable 2025 was.
Brisbane were sitting 11th on the ladder at the halfway point of the season, a 5-7 record and plenty of doubt surrounding the new coach. What followed was one of the most unlikely premiership runs in recent memory. The Broncos won 13 of their last 15 games and entered the finals on fire.
Then came three straight come-from-behind wins. They overturned a 28–12 deficit against minor premiers Canberra in the first week of finals. They peeled back a 14–0 lead against four-time premiers Penrith in the preliminary final. And then came the decider against Melbourne, where they trailed 22–12 at the break before producing a stunning second-half to claim the title.
Fullback Reece Walsh was awarded the Clive Churchill Medal for what many described as one of the greatest individual grand final performances ever — 176 run metres, 14 tackle breaks, three try assists and a couple of try savers that kept the Broncos alive. Gehamat Shibasaki, who re-emerged at the club after years in the wilderness, finished as the team's top tryscorer with 18 tries. Skipper Adam Reynolds contributed 180 points across the season and won his second premiership.
It was a premiership that had everything.
The 2026 Challenge: Life as the Hunted
Every team will come for the Broncos this year. That's just the reality of being premiers.
Interestingly, Reece Walsh doesn't see it that way. In the lead-up to Round 1, he declared the Broncos are still "the hunters" — not the hunted — and that the squad has the hunger and belief to go back-to-back.
"I wouldn't say we're the hunted, I think we're the hunters, we're going after it and everybody's going to bring their best," Walsh said ahead of the season opener.
That attitude will be tested early. Brisbane's start to 2026 has been bumpy — losses to Penrith and Parramatta in the opening two rounds left them sitting 15th on the ladder, with some genuine questions about their attack. But Maguire is not a coach who panics, and the squad that won a premiership from 11th in 2025 knows how to turn a season around.
Round 3 sees them head to AAMI Park to face the Storm — the team they beat in last year's decider. Games don't get bigger than that early in the season.
The Squad: Who to Watch in 2026
The core of Brisbane's 2025 premiership side remains intact, which is a huge tick.
Reece Walsh is simply the most exciting player in the competition right now. The 23-year-old cemented his superstar status with a Clive Churchill Medal and a man-of-the-match performance in the Kangaroos' Ashes series opener at Wembley. He's the sort of player who can change a game in a single play — and usually does.
Payne Haas had his most prolific season in 2025, playing 24 games and providing the engine room up front that every successful Broncos team needs. His combination of power and work rate is as good as any prop in the competition.
Adam Reynolds continues to be underrated. He finished 2025 with 180 points, passed 300 NRL games, and won his second premiership. There were genuine rumours he'd leave for Hull KR in Super League during the off-season — he chose to stay, and Brisbane fans should be thrilled about that.
Patrick Carrigan leads from the front as co-captain. Gehamat Shibasaki will be back to prove his 2025 form was no fluke. Ezra Mam at five-eighth gives Brisbane a constant attacking threat, while Ben Hunt — who returned to the club this year for the first time since 2017 — brought a level of experience and composure that the Broncos hadn't had at dummy half in years.
New recruit Grant Anderson is one to watch at wing. He joined during the off-season and makes his debut against his former club in the draw.
Suncorp Stadium: The Cauldron
If you haven't been to a Broncos home game at Suncorp Stadium, put it on your list.
With a capacity of over 52,500 and the sideline just six metres from the closest seat, it's one of the most intimate and intimidating venues in the entire competition. The atmosphere for big home games is something else — especially now that Brisbane are carrying the weight of a premiership.
In 2025, the average home crowd was 41,185 with the biggest crowd against the Cowboys drawing 45,317. Expect those numbers to grow in 2026 on the back of last year's success.
The Broncos play the majority of their home games on Thursday and Friday nights under lights at Suncorp — a set-up that produces some of the best atmospheres in the NRL calendar.
Magic Round 2026: The Biggest Weekend in Rugby League
If there's one event every NRL fan should experience at least once, it's Magic Round.
In 2026, Suncorp Stadium hosts all eight NRL matches across **Friday 15 May to Sunday 17 May** as part of Round 11 of the season. It's the one weekend of the year where every team in the competition plays at the same venue — Brisbane becomes the centre of the rugby league universe.
This year the Broncos face the New Zealand Warriors on **Sunday 17 May at 4:00pm AEST**, which shapes as one of the standout games of the weekend. The Warriors always travel with massive support and the Warriors vs Broncos clash at a packed Suncorp is the kind of game that sells itself.
The full Magic Round schedule features some massive matchups — including Roosters vs Cowboys, Eels vs Storm and Panthers vs St George. The four-day festival also kicks off with Women's State of Origin Game 2 on Thursday 14 May, making it a full four-day celebration of rugby league.
Tickets have already been in high demand. Sunday in particular has very limited availability, with 1-day passes for Friday and Saturday still accessible but moving fast. If Magic Round is on your radar, don't sit on it.
Key Broncos Matchups to Circle in 2026
Beyond Magic Round, a few games on the Broncos' schedule stand out:
Broncos vs Panthers (Round 1): The season started at Suncorp with the reigning premiers hosting the side they beat in the 2025 preliminary final. Brisbane came up short in the opener, which makes the rematch one of the most anticipated games of the year.
Broncos vs Storm (Round 3): The 2025 Grand Final rematch at AAMI Park. Melbourne have been electric to start the year — this one shapes as an early season blockbuster that will tell us a lot about where both clubs are at.
Broncos vs Cowboys: No rivalry in Queensland rugby league runs as deep as this one. The Cowboys have always been Brisbane's great rival, and this fixture always delivers intensity and atmosphere.
Magic Round (Broncos vs Warriors, Round 11): As covered above — a must-watch event at the spiritual home of rugby league.
Why Demand for Broncos Tickets Will Be Higher Than Ever in 2026
Three things are driving ticket demand for Brisbane games this year.
First, they're premiers. Fans who had drifted away in the lean years are coming back, and the rugby league community wants to see how Maguire's side handles life at the top.
Second, the squad is built to compete. This isn't a one-year wonder — the core of the team is young, talented and locked in at the club for multiple seasons. Watching Reece Walsh and Payne Haas in their prime is a privilege.
Third, the 2025 NRL season broke crowd records — the highest aggregate and average regular season crowds in first-grade rugby league history. The game's popularity is at a peak. And with Brisbane carrying the banner as premiers, Suncorp is going to be loud and full.
